Public Health Testing Services

Public Health Testing Services (PHTS) was established in June 2020 through the collaborative efforts of the University of Iowa’s State Hygienic Laboratory (SHL), Iowa Department of Public Health, and Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory to expand COVID-19 testing capabilities and capacities in Iowa.

PHTS is CLIA certified to perform COVID-19 PCR and antibody testing on human patient samples. (All PCR testing is performed on a pre-approved basis only.) The SHL provides PHTS guidance regarding the specific assays and testing services provided. PHTS is a stand-alone operating unit associated with the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Health care providers (Clinics) must first get set up as a PHTS client to make case submissions and retrieve corresponding results. To learn more or get set up as a client, please call the laboratory or click on “Clinic Sign Up” on the PHTS Client Portal.

To provide timely and scalable service, all case submissions need to be generated via the electronic submission application on the PHTS Client Portal.
